SEMENYIH, 12 January: Nirvana Asia Group hosted the 5th edition of its Chinese calligraphy competition with the “2025 Year of the Snake Chinese Calligraphy Competition” on Sunday at Nirvana Memorial Garden (Semenyih) to welcome the upcoming Chinese New Year of the Snake. This annual event also simultaneously received official recognition from the Malaysia Book of Records as the nation’s first Chinese calligraphy competition held in a memorial park.

Launched in 2018, the Chinese Calligraphy Competition is one of Nirvana Asia’s annual flagship events. After a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, this year’s event saw over 2,000 participants, including students, teachers, parents, and members of the public, joining together to celebrate the joyous occasion.

In her opening speech, Nirvana Memorial Park (Malaysia Central Region) Sales & Marketing CEO, Datin Lee Jye Chyi, highlighted the significance of the event, “This achievement follows our recognition last September for hosting the ‘Largest Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration in a Memorial Park’ during the ‘A Cosmic Mid-Autumn Lunar Adventure’ event. Once again, we’ve set a new benchmark.”

“This recognition is not just an honour for us but also a meaningful contribution to the preservation and promotion of Chinese culture in Malaysia,” she added. Datin Lee emphasized that Spring Festival couplets are more than just decorations; they carry wishes for prosperity and happiness.

“Traditionally hand-drawn through calligraphy, these couplets hold emotional warmth and a personal touch that printed versions cannot replicate. I hope that events like this ensure the enduring appeal of this tradition, preventing it from fading away like the exchange of New Year greeting cards.”

This year, Nirvana Asia also embraced sustainability by collaborating with “Cardboard Country”, known for its eco-friendly cardboard art. Together, they created a 2-meter-tall cardboard Year of the Snake mascot, which will remain on display at the park’s Temple of the Three Saints throughout the Lunar New Year.

The competition was fully sponsored by Nirvana Asia and jointly organised with Sin Chew Daily, New Era University College, and the Federation of Calligraphy Society Malaysia. Categories included Primary School, Lower Secondary, Upper Secondary, Open, Family, and a special category for non-Chinese participants. Organisers announced that all student participants would earn co-curricular activity points, with winners across categories sharing a total prize pool of RM18,500.

Notable attendees included Nirvana Asia Group Executive Director, Dato’ Indera Reeno Kong Yew Lian, Malaysia Book of Records representatives Lee Pooi Leng and Menaga Vadamalai, New Era University College Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mok Soon Chong, the Organization of Taiwan Education & Cultural, Malaysia CEO, Beh Chew Nam, and Selangor State Education Department Language Unit Assistant Director, Beh Siok Kun.
