KUALA LUMPUR, 11 April – Following the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar two weeks ago – causing thousands of casualties, collapsed buildings, and severe infrastructure damage – Nirvana Asia Group, Asia’s largest integrated bereavement care provider, announced a donation of RM1 million to aid in disaster relief efforts. The contribution was officially handed over to Tzu Chi Foundation Malaysia to support recovery areas in the affected areas.

The donation will be used for critical post-disaster recovery, including emergency medical aid, temporary shelters for displaced victims, basic necessities such as food, clean water, and clothing, repairs to damage infrastructure, as well as psychological counselling and long-term community rebuilding efforts.

Unyielding Compassion: Tzu Chi’s Ongoing Humanitarian Mission

Tzu Chi has long upheld the spirit of “treating other’s suffering as one’s own,” providing cross-border humanitarian aid regardless of nationality, race, or religion. In every major disaster around the world, Tzu Chi volunteers are known for their swift response – offering medical relief, supplies, emotional support, and holistic care.

This earthquake was no exception. Since 30 March, Tzu Chi teams have been on the ground in Myanmar spearheading frontline relief efforts, staying true to their philosophy by “prioritising humanity and society, uniting all through great love and compassion.”

In partnership with the United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD), Tzu Chi Selangor and Kuala Lumpur has already delivered essential items to Myanmar, including emergency beds, blankets, face masks, and gloves. Currently, 160 beds have been delivered and deployed safe drinking water, and basic necessities.

Additionally, Tzu Chi has implemented cash-for-work initiatives to support affected locals and monks in constructing temporary zinc-roofed shelters for those who were left homeless by the disaster.

Nirvana Asia Group founder and executive chairman, Tan Sri Kong Hon Kong, expressed his confidence in Tzu Chi’s well-established, efficient, and professional humanitarian relief system. Therefore, it came as no surprise that Tzu Chi was forefront on Kong’s mind for the donation upon learning about the disaster.

“No matter the disaster, Tzu Chi volunteers are always on the front lines,” Tan Sri Kong said, “Regardless of how challenging or chaotic the conditions, even when food and shelter are lacking, we still see their silent dedication—bringing hope to survivors through selfless love and compassion.”

He firmly believes that Tzu Chi will ensure this donation is used effectively, delivering targeted aid and spiritual comfort to disaster victims. Nirvana Asia Group trusts that the funds will be maximized for its intended purpose, making a tangible difference in both material assistance and spiritual healing.

Nirvana Asia Group: In the Face of Tragedy, Compassion Transcends Borders

The earthquake has left countless survivors displaced, with medical, food, transport, and education systems severely impacted.

“In the face of tragedy, we cannot stand idly by,” Kong emphasized, “Every disaster reminds us—compassion should transcend borders.”

Since its establishment 35 years ago, Nirvana Asia Group has consistently extended help in times of crisis, including donating more than RM10 million for relief and reconstruction following Nepal’s 2015 7.8 magnitude earthquake; contributing RM8 million worth in medical equipment, supplies, food provisions, and face masks to help the country battle the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020; and donating RM500,000 to aid in the flood relief efforts in Sarawak last year.

Beyond disaster relief, Nirvana Asia Group has been a consistent supporter of charitable causes, educational institutions, and social welfare efforts—believing that true business success lies not just in profits, but in meaningful contributions to society.

Recovery after a disaster is a marathon, not a sprint. This donation extends Nirvana’s ongoing charitable mission, reaffirming its dedication to supporting vulnerable communities worldwide. Nirvana Asia Group hopes to inspire other businesses, organizations, and individuals to step forward in aiding disaster-stricken areas.

“We believe every act of kindness can ignite hope,” Tan Sri Kong Hon Kong concluded, “Nirvana Asia Group will continue to monitor global disasters, uphold humanitarian values, and fulfil our corporate social responsibility—providing tangible assistance to those in need.”

Tan Sri Kong said that Tzu Chi has a well-established, efficient, and professional humanitarian relief system, so he is confident that Tzu Chi will be able to maximise the funds for its intended purpose – delivering targeted aid and spiritual comfort to disaster victims.

As a token of appreciation, Tan Sri Kong Hon Kong was presented with a souvenir by Puan Sri Tong Siew Bee.
